San Carlos City was already a flourishing community since pre-colonial times. Previously called Binalatongan, the city was renamed by the Spaniards as San Carlos (in honor of their king, Charles) to erase the memory of the Palaris revolt. The name of Binalatongan was derived from the abundance of mongo (mung bean) plants along the San Juan riverbanks.
