In May 2023, a tragic incident occurred in Fairfield Township, Ohio, when 25-year-old Robbi Robinson Jr. attacked his father's fiancée, 50-year-old Brenda Scott. After his father left for work, Robinson entered the bedroom where Scott was sleeping, assaulted her by knocking out her teeth, and then doused her and the room with accelerants before setting her on fire. Scott managed to escape by jumping from a second-story window and was hospitalized in critical condition. She succumbed to her injuries nearly a month later, on June 9, 2023.

During the trial, prosecutors presented evidence including DNA, video, and audio recordings, demonstrating that Robinson had planned and executed the attack. Despite facing the death penalty, the jury recommended a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. Judge Keith Spaeth formalized this sentence in February 2025 .​

Robinson's defense did not present a case during the trial but focused on the sentencing phase, highlighting his mental health issues and family background. A forensic psychologist testified that Robinson had borderline personality disorder. Robinson expressed remorse during his sentencing, stating, "I am sorry that Brenda is dead. I am sorry that I am responsible for her death." He also spoke about feeling abandoned by his family .

The case drew significant attention due to the brutal nature of the crime and the familial relationships involved. Brenda Scott was a registered nurse and mother, remembered by her family as a loving and caring individual. Her daughter, Brianna Williams, expressed the family's grief, stating, "This has left me and my family in tears and we will forever have a hole in our hearts without her" .​
