How to Crosshatch a Pomegranate with Pen and Ink

Hey everyone! In today's video, I’ll be showing you how to cross-hatch a pomegranate using a Micron pen. Cross-hatching is an essential drawing technique to create depth, texture, and shading, and in this tutorial, I’ll walk you through each step of the process to help you master it.

To start, I’m using a Micron 02 pen to add lines that define the form of the pomegranate. I’ll explain how to choose the direction of your lines based on the shape and contours of the object. For beginners, don’t worry about the edges—focus on layering lines into the middle and gradually building up the texture. I’ll also demonstrate how to vary your line speed, using both fast and slow lines, to achieve the best results.

A key component of cross-hatching is creating contrast. This means building up areas of darkness and light to add volume and make your drawing look three-dimensional. I’ll show you how to carefully darken areas and leave light areas in the pomegranate to enhance its form and texture. Keep in mind that it’s important not to overdo the lines—leaving some light areas intact will help your work look more realistic and dynamic.

By layering your lines and adjusting contrast, you can create a beautifully shaded, three-dimensional pomegranate. Plus, this technique works well with other mediums, such as watercolor, POSCA markers, and inks, allowing you to experiment with mixed media in your artwork.
