Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was caught on a hot mic saying President Donald Trump's desire for the United States to make Canada its 51st state "a real thing." The comments were recorded on Feb. 7, 2025, as Canadian elected officials prepare for Trump's tariff threats after the U.S. president paused his 25% tariff on Canadian imports.
"Mr. Trump has it in mind that the easiest way to do it is absorbing our country and it is a real thing. In my conversation with him—" Trudeau said before the CBC recording cut off.
Trudeau reportedly went on to say Trump's interest in absorbing Canada is for its natural resources.
