St Helena Island is a small, remote volcanic island located in the South Atlantic Ocean, about 1,950 km (1,210 mi) west of the coast of southwestern Africa. It is a British Overseas Territory, along with Ascension and Tristan da Cunha. The island is best known as the place of Napoleon Bonaparte’s exile and death (1815–1821).
St Helena covers about 122 square kilometers (47 square miles) and has a rugged landscape with steep cliffs and lush valleys. The capital, Jamestown, lies in a narrow valley between dramatic cliffs. Despite its isolation, the island has a unique mix of British and tropical influences, diverse wildlife (including the endemic St Helena plover, or “wirebird”), and a small population of around 4,000–5,000 residents.
A modern airport, opened in 2017, has made St Helena more accessible than when it could only be reached by sea.
