If you are watching this video, you might know that the first step to applying for STEM OPT is submitting the completed Form I-983 Training Plan.

In the previous video, I discussed how important it is to check the edition date of Form I-765. Similarly, checking the expiration date of Form I-983 is very important. Click the link in the comment to learn how to confirm the most recent expiration date of Form I-983.

Now, let’s skim through how to complete the Form I-983.

Page 1: Remember that the STEM OPT start date should be the next day of your OPT end date. In terms of the “Based on prior degree” field, what to choose will be different based on the degree that you are applying for STEM OPT.

Page 2: Please note that applicants must sign with a pen. For other fields, you can reach out to your employer to get information.

From page 3 you will be asked to write a short essay type of answers. For the Goals and Objectives section, explain what is the goal of your employment a.k.a. training. Remember you can refer to sample examples that you can find on SEVISSAVVY.COM.

Then, under the Employer Oversight section, explain how your supervisor or company will assist you to achieve the goal.

Lastly, explain how your performance will be evaluated to see if you met the goal at the end of STEM OPT under the Measures and Assessments section.

On page 4, your employer can put the signature. It is worth noting that page 5 is not for STEM OPT applicants. It’s the page for students who are currently working through STEM OPT. To learn when to complete page 5, follow me and check the next video.
