Thirthahalli is associated with two legends: The story of Parashurama and the story of Ramayana. The legend of Parashurama and a legend set in Ramayana period is supposed to have happened in Thirthahalli. The name 'Parashurama Thirtha' or 'Rama Thirtha' would be the origin of the name Thirthahalli.
Thirthahalli is a town in Karnataka, India, known for its cultural and historical significance. Originally a part of the Keladi dynasty, it later came under the rule of the Vijayanagara Empire. The town has been a center for arts and literature, with renowned Kannada writer Kuvempu hailing from this region. Thirthahalli has witnessed the cultural and historical transitions of Karnataka, contributing to the rich heritage of the state.
Thirthahalli, situated in the Shimoga district of Karnataka, is known for its picturesque landscapes and historical importance. Named after the sacred "Thirtha" (holy water) from the Tunga River, the town is surrounded by lush greenery and is a gateway to the Western Ghats.
The story of Lord Parashurama and the axe is a significant episode in Hindu mythology. According to the legend, Parashurama, the sixth avatar of Lord Vishnu, received a divine axe, or parashu, from Lord Shiva after intense penance.
Parashurama's mother, Renuka, once pleased Sage Jamadagni, Parashurama's father, with her devotion. Pleased with her, the sage asked for a boon, and she requested to be a faithful and devoted wife. This pleased the sage, and they had children, including Parashurama.
One day, while Renuka was fetching water from the river, she saw Gandharvas playing in the water. Her mind briefly wandered, and she lost her concentration. When she returned, Sage Jamadagni noticed her lapse and perceived it as a breach of her devotion. In his anger, he asked his sons to behead their mother.
All sons refused except Parashurama, who unhesitatingly beheaded his mother. Pleased with his obedience and loyalty, Sage Jamadagni offered Parashurama a boon. Parashurama requested the revival of his mother and his brothers, and the sage granted the wish.
Later, to reward Parashurama's penance and devotion, Lord Shiva gifted him a powerful axe, thus earning him the name Parashurama (the Rama with the axe). This axe became a symbol of his power and played a crucial role in his various exploits, including his mission to cleanse the world of corrupt and oppressive Kshatriya rulers.
