Shree Chamundeshwari Devi Temple
Chamundi Hill Mysore
Chamundi Hills, Mysuru, Karnataka. The hilltop offers a panoramic view of Mysuru city.
Deity: Goddess Chamundeshwari, who, according to legend, slayed the buffalo-headed demon Mahishasura on this hill, earning the title 'Mahishasura Mardini'.
Significance: It is considered one of the 18 Maha Shakti Peethas.
Architecture & Age:
The original shrine is believed to have been built by the Hoysala Dynasty rulers around the 12th century.
The majestic seven-tiered entrance tower (Gopuram) was added later by the Wodeyar rulers, notably rebuilt by Krishnaraja Wodeyar III around 1827.
The famous monolithic statue of Nandi (Lord Shiva's bull mount), one of the largest in India (16 ft tall, 25 ft long), is located halfway up the hill and was installed by Dodda Devaraja Wodeyar in 1659.
