By the time Sam Colt arrived in Paterson in 1836, he had already sailed halfway around the globe as a common seaman, journeyed through much of America as a travelling showman, and invented the first-ever practical multi-shot firearm. Then, having already seen more of the world than most men twice his age, he opened his first gun mill. He was just 21 years old.
Colt’s Paterson venture ultimately failed. But before it did, it served as the proving ground for a new kind of weapon—and new industrial production methods used to make it-- that would profoundly impact the development of the United States in the 19th century.
In a lecture based on his critically acclaimed biography of Colt, author Jim Rasenberger will focus on the inventor’s early years, from his birth in Hartford, CT, and through his debut in Paterson as one of the most extraordinary entrepreneurs in American history. Bold and restless, ill-behaved but brilliant -- few young men have ever so perfectly embodied the nation they were helping to create as Sam Colt. And no single object so perfectly captured the extraordinary changes occurring in America in the decades before the Civil War as his famous revolver.
