Here's another video for my home recording tutorial series for beginners. Here are some options you can use to add bass to your tracks If you don't own or have access to a bass guitar.
We'll cover the software instrument bass and tone for my original song, 'Above The Filth'. I'm using a Logic preset called 'Fretless Electric Bass', which is a sampled instrument. I've added a light chorus on it.
There are a few ways of creating the MIDI for your software instrument bass track. You can use a MIDI controller to record some MIDI, or you can program it in manually by hand, or you can record an audio guitar track and use software (such as Logic's Flex Time) to convert the audio to MIDI.
The last option is to use a technique I call 'guitar as bass'. This is when done by recording single root notes from a guitar, and then pitch shifting or transposing the track down an octave. That's not the best solution in my opinion, but it isn't bad, and might be easier for you than dealing with MIDI. I'll demonstrate an example of this with my original song, 'The Eldritch Brain'.
