Schools are closing across central London due to the declining numbers of young families in the area.
In Hackney, Colvestone Primary is among the many schools that face a proposed closure or merger.
A drop in the birthrate fuelled by lockdowns, Brexit and a cost of living crisis means there are now 600 fewer reception places taken up in 2022/23 compared to 2014. The borough has a 20% vacancy rate and the loss of 20 classrooms worth of children. The council says in Hackney there was £30m less in funding for Hackney primary schools compared to if the classrooms were full.
But his is happening all over London. Since 2001, Lambeth has seen a 10% drop in households with at least one school-age child, and in Southwark, it’s 11%.
