Quake was developed by ID Software and published by GT Interactive. The author of the custom level I'm playing is Simon "Sock" OCallaghan. I own nothing in this video.
And now for something slightly different!
When it comes to classic Quake, there is a vibrant mapping community that is still thriving to this day. As a result, over the years the game has seen some truly phenomenal custom releases by many talented level designers. One such name that has solidified itself in the collective consciousness is that of Sock, who's made some of the very best maps for the game that I've ever seen. They were all published in the 2010s and they were designed to be run by engines with increased limits, which is why the brush work is so impressive and the entities so numerous since the author's vision can be fully realized.
Nyarlathotep's Sand Castle is one of my top favorites not just because of its Egyptian theme (which I'm a sucker for), but also thanks to its wondrous atmosphere. It's simply unparalleled and achieved by some stellar lighting work. The map also boasts non-linear level layout, intricate architecture, gorgeous textures and some new models and enemies. It's challenging without crossing the line and that makes it absolutely worth playing. There are many secrets to be discovered as well, which is the norm for levels made by Sock.
I noticed that there didn't seem to be a clean playthrough of the level uploaded on YouTube, so I decided that I would correct that.
Note: This map requires Arcane Dimensions and an engine port with increased limits like Quakespam.
