Early on in his first years in Hollywood, David Gates had hopes of joining the greatest instrumental group in rock. In 1962 he and fellow guitarist Jerry Cole shared an interest in auditioning for The Ventures. David did work on several recording sessions with members of the group, as with this song that got rejected as a track on their album Twist Party Volume 2. Combining the mood of the popular dance the Bossa Nova with the relaxing feel of being on a beach, Ventures members Bob Bogle, Mel Taylor and Don Wilson came up with "Bossa Nova Beach Girl." Only guitarist Bogle and drummer Taylor took part in the September 27, 1962 session to record it. Enlisted to help was percussionist Roy Harte, guitarist Billy Strange, and as the bass player... David Gates. The song appeared more than a half-century later, in 2014, on the Ace Records compilation In The Vaults Volume 5. .
