بامداد خمار، داستانی عبرت‌آموز از سیاه‌بختیِ محبوبه در زندگی با عشقش، رحیم است؛ روایتی که از همان برگ‌های نخست آغاز می‌شود و سراسر کتاب را دربرمی‌گیرد.

خواستگارهایش را رد می‌کند و آن‌قدر در برابر خانواده‌اش مقاومت می‌کند تا سرانجام آن‌ها به ازدواجش رضایت می‌دهند—اما او را طرد می‌کنند؛
به‌گونه‌ای که نه او اجازه دارد به خانواده‌اش سری بزند، و نه در طول هفت سال زندگی‌اش با رحیم، کسی از خانواده به دیدارش می‌آید.

Bamdad-e Khomar is a cautionary tale about the misfortune that befalls Mahbubeh in her life with her beloved, Rahim.
The story begins in the very first pages and continues throughout the entire novel.
Although the events take place during the early years of Reza Shah’s reign, aside from one or two brief mentions—such as the unveiling decree—there is little reference to the political or social context of the time.
Mahbubeh, the cultured and aristocratic daughter of Basir al-Molk, falls in love with a carpenter’s apprentice named Rahim.
She rejects her suitors and resists her family’s objections until they finally consent to the marriage—but they disown her.
As a result, she is forbidden from visiting her family, and throughout the seven years of her life with Rahim, no one from her family comes to see her.
