Varanasi (or Benares) is a city in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, founded in the 11th century BC. Considered the spiritual capital of India, it attracts Hindu pilgrims who come to bathe in the sacred waters of the Ganges and indulge in funeral rituals. The city's winding streets are dotted with some 2,000 temples, including Kashi Vishwanath, the "Golden Temple," dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva.
