Professor Bill Lucas explains 'expansive education' - the kind of education that all schools need to be doing if they want to be improving the life chances of young people, as well as helping them to do well in the tests of life - in examinations.
Expansive education does this by helping teachers and school leaders think about expanding:
1) the purpose of education - beyond knowledge and skills, to incorporate the capabilities they want young men and women to develop as well. Things like perseverance, collaboration, and self-regulation;
2) the 'space' of schooling into the community, through extra-curricular activities and parental engagement;
3) their understanding of the nature of intelligence. Young people can expand their intelligence, and learn to get better at anything;
4) their sense of their own role. Effective teachers think about themselves not just as 'teacher' but as 'learner', inquiring into their own practice and understanding the impact of their teaching on the young people in their care.
The Expansive Education Network is a group of schools and teachers who all believe that the purpose of schools is more than just examination success.
It is an opportunity for teachers to learn how to undertake their own 'teacher inquiry', and to share practice with other like-minded colleagues.
It is a membership organisation with tailored twilight sessions that fit around the busy lives of teachers. Our coaching and support helps teachers pick a 'research question' that matters to them, checks in on progress, and enables teachers to share results and celebrate success.
