In this video, I dissolve a sample of brass pellets in concentrated nitric acid and then dilute this in a volumetric flask. I examine the absorption spectra of solutions that contain copper(II) and zinc cations as well as sulfate and nitrate anions. I prepare a series of standard solutions of copper(II) nitrate and measure their absorbance at 650 nm, close to λmax for copper(II) cations in aqueous solution. Finally, I measure the absorbance of the solution containing the dissolved brass. Using the data from the video, you should be able to calculate the percent copper (by mass) in the brass sample.
