After more than 15 hours of a relentless rescue operation, the body of Uma Shankar, a 32-year-old tourist from Bihar, has been located at the Siang-Yamne river gorge. However, the recovery operation has been delayed due to difficult terrain and adverse weather conditions.
Teams from the SDRF and local police have been working tirelessly since Thursday evening, with local residents assisting in the rescue efforts. According to a friend of the deceased, Shankar had climbed a rock near the Pongging viewpoint while his friends went to buy bananas to break a 10-day fast. Tragically, he slipped and fell into the gorge, prompting immediate alerts to the authorities.
Officials said the operation to retrieve the body will resume tomorrow, as challenging terrain and weather have made immediate recovery impossible. The deceased’s family has urged authorities for the swift completion of the rescue.
