Campari is over 150 years old, is a staple at any quality bar, and is considered by many (including myself) to be the best Italian bitter. But with so many competitors, does it still deserve the top spot?
Today I try an aperitif and a bitter from Contratto, a winery nearly as old as the venerable Campari brand, though they did not start making their bitter until 1933.
Like a rookie, I forgot to talk about ABV.
Aperol—11%
Contratto Aperitif—13.5%
Campari—24%
Contratto Bitter—22%
It’s also worth noting that Contratto uses carrot and beetroot to color their products naturally, while Campari uses food coloring, having pivoted from Cochineal some time ago.
