Picked up off the streets with three starving puppies, a dirty harness around her body, and the second half of her back leg gruesomely ripped from her body, Lucille was using the last stretch of energy she had in her.

There's no doubt about it - had she been found days later, she wouldn't be here and her puppies would be motherless, if they even survived the streets without her, that is. Sunday, June 19th was the day we were alerted to this critical girl. She had been found with every sign that she had belonged to someone before - a harness and a collar - but no owner in sight. After doing some investigating, we found that no one was looking for her either. Whoever had her...obviously didn't care that their dog was hobbling around on three feet, burning herself on the hot asphalt, and killing herself in an attempt to provide for her puppies. The shelter tried to stabilize her leg but the injury was extensive, with her bones literally exposed. It was like something had ripped her leg off, tearing skin, muscle, tendons, and bone.
She obviously can't walk on the leg but given the pain and condition she was in, we were amazed that she was even up on the three legs she had.

We committed to caring for her as soon as we could, knowing that her injuries would be the death of her if not helped. Once we got her to the hospital, doctors started assessing her injuries and found that on top of everything, she was also heartworm positive and dozens of worms were crowding in her heart cavity. She had emergency amputation surgery done on her leg, to stop the spread of infection and sepsis and is now recovering at the hospital. Her puppies, too, are being tested and started on initial treatments. We haven't been given exact amounts for her surgery or care yet but have been quoted upwards of $3000 - so any donations you can give to help us care for this mother and her babies would mean the world.
