Welcome back to FixIt All Workshop! In this video, I’m giving a new lease of life to an old Black & Decker electric screwdriver, model KC9019, that runs on 3.6V using three nickel-cadmium (NiCd) cells. Instead of letting it go to waste, I’m restoring it by swapping out the original NiCd cells with rechargeable AA NiCd batteries, cleaning up the electric motor and gearbox.
What You'll Learn:
Disassembling and thoroughly cleaning the electric motor, including checking the carbon brushes and meticulously cleaning the rotor contact pads for optimal performance.
Opening and maintaining the intricate planetary gear reduction system, including greasing and precisely reassembling the gearbox to ensure smooth operation.
Properly reassembling the gearbox with the torque setting slip system, focusing on the specific alignment needed for the planetary gears to function correctly.
Why This is Important:
This video shows how to save a perfectly functional tool from ending up in a landfill by performing some basic maintenance and upgrades. By replacing the batteries and cleaning the motor and gearbox, you can extend the life of your tools and keep them running like new.
Tools & Materials Needed:
Rechargeable AA NiCd batteries
Screwdriver set
Cleaning solution (isopropyl alcohol or brake cleaner spray in this case)
Grease for gears
Multimeter (optional for testing)
