“Our Home” (2022)
Composed by D.I.D. CHOI
Our Home is a statement on colonialism. Since the 15th century, powers began colonizing other cultures, erasing, assimilating, and abandoning. The film uses AI generated images and later archival photos from Korea before, during, and after the Japanese colonial era (1910-1945). This shows one of countless examples of a peaceful country being pried open by external powers, slowly taken over, fought over, and left out to dry. It is just as relevant with current affairs in the Middle East, other remnants of colonialism, and war.
The music takes on flavours of Korean music. The unison presentation of the melody harkens to independence fighters singing together. Violent outbursts constantly interrupt and trample the serenity, yet by the end, the people stand together to rebuild.
