The final step in the assembly of the Aegis ship-based radar antenna involves covering each radar emitter with a ceramic window, a critical component for the antenna's functionality. This window is securely fixed in place using RTV adhesive. To achieve this, a 6-axis robot, mounted on a track above the antenna, employs a Cognex vision system to meticulously scan the antenna face and locate each empty pocket that needs a window. Once an empty pocket is identified, the system selects the appropriate ceramic cover from a feeder, applies RTV adhesive to it, and then uses a second Cognex camera to inspect the applied adhesive for quality assurance. Upon passing the inspection, the window is accurately placed into the pocket. Advent Design pioneered this process, installing the first system in 1999 and subsequently upgrading it with a replacement in 2018.
