Notes by Angela Hewitt © 2014: "On the First Movement:
Never in his piano concertos did Mozart offer more themes than in the opening movement […]. Suspended notes in the horns and nervous bassoons comment on the first fanfare. The second is answered by the same music, but now in the clarinets and violins, making their presence known. Now that the stage is set, Mozart presents us with a tutti of resplendent orchestral color. And when the soloist enters, it is with an entirely new theme, immediately asserting its independence. Broad leaps in the melodic line—those very leaps so dear to Mozart when writing for singers—blend with passages that must not simply be rattled off at high speed. This is certainly one of Mozart’s most difficult concertos to play, but also one in which bravura for the sake of bravura has no place.
Two things deserve mention in this opening movement: the abrupt transition to B-flat minor, introduced by rather impassioned piano chords shortly after the initial flourishes; and the moment that, to me, is utterly haunting—when, in the development, after a long episode of tortuous rapid passages, the piano emerges with a new melody, breathtaking in its disarming beauty, but remarkable also for its brevity. Its single appearance masterfully leads us back to the recapitulation. One must be cautious with older editions that omit two measures (at measure 282), which are not found in the autograph but appear on an additional sketch page. I believe they were first published in 1961 […].
The Second:
[…] As in his first masterpiece in the genre, the Piano Concerto No. 9 in E-flat major, K. 271, Mozart chooses the key of C minor to express profound sadness, even tragedy. The violins add their mutes, producing a particularly anguished sound as they present the opening theme. The piano echoes their plaintive song, adorned with notes but also with tragic pauses that make us hold our breath. The variations alternate between major and minor—the first, in major, is entrusted to the winds. Returning to minor, swirling piano figures exhale the same despair found in the C minor Concerto. A charming duet between the flute and bassoon, gently accompanied by the strings, provides a brief respite. The next variation, in minor, begins with an agitated orchestra, to which the piano responds pleadingly. But what likely struck the first audience the most was the coda. Just when all hope seems lost, Mozart casts a ray of sunlight, briefly shifting twice to C major, for only a single measure. It is a stroke of genius, one that gives me chills every time I play this piece […].
