When most people think about the history of gold grillz in rap culture, they think it all started with Paul Wall or maybe the Nelly's 2005 single Grillz. In fact we did a video a while back on the history of hip hop jewelry in where we talked about grillz.
In the video we made the mistake of stating that grillz started in the south, but one of our astute viewers brought to our attention in the comment section that grillzs had in fact predated to New York in the 70s and 80s and I was like WHAAAAAT!
So I decided to look it up, and fact is, they were both right and wrong. In this video we go through a quick history of gold teeth, from their start on ancient Etruscan women, to there use on American slaves, all the way to today where gold grills have become a huge part of rap culture.
