Hi viewers.

This video was a long time coming. I wanted to post on my page to show my support for the #BlackLivesMatter movement but also for George Floyd.

This movement is near and dear to my heart as a person of colour. As someone who gets asked all the time, “what are you?” It’s clear to me that to those asking, that I don’t belong. Why is my skin colour like that? As though I had a choice in the matter, as though it makes me any less Australian. I remember being in school, in primary school not even 10 years old wishing I was white. If I was white, my life would be easier. I was a child and I knew that the colour of my skin would affect my experiences and my life.

To this day I don’t know how to identify myself. I’m not white enough to be white. I’m not Asian enough to be Asian. I’m not black enough to be black.

I am the product of my parents - a Black Malaysian immigrant and a White Aboriginal. But they shouldn’t be limited to these descriptors. They are more than their heritage and their colour.

My Dad has shown me how even when the world is against you, as one of the only black kids in school, you can still be successful. Even when his teacher said he will never amount to anything. He was able to amount to so much. He is a loving parent who spoils his kids rotten. Even when we were growing up, we never felt poor or less fortunate than any other kid.

My Mum is the most fiercely protective woman I know. She’s strong and a rock for me. I know she’ll have my back and defend me. She reminds me of myself and that is never a bad thing. It means I’m strong too. She never made me feel like my skin was a problem, why a random woman at a store was rude. They were the problem, not me. Which means I never felt held back in my childhood. I got to be a kid.

Even when my Mum tells me of a time we were at a bakery and a man said, “who’s (n word) child is this?” I’m proud of my mum for calling him out but I am thankful I was too young to remember. That his racism didn’t stick with me forever. But other children of colour are not as lucky. Gianna Floyd will grow up without a father who should be here today.

However, it’s taken this movement for me to look back at my experiences and not dismiss them. Not simply brush them off as, they were just rude or having a bad day. It is inauthentic for me to do so. The fact that I am trained to show my bag at every store when my white friends do not, means something. The fact that my white friends wanted to ask the cops for directions whilst I was terrified, means something. The fact that I am an aboriginal woman but I know little to nothing about my own culture, means something. Australia has a history that we do not discuss enough.

Attending the protest in Adelaide, Australia made me realise how much we don’t hear. The names that don’t get mentioned. We have a prime minister who said slavery didn’t exist here. It did. A prime minister who calls the BLM protests a disgrace and to find another way when only a month ago with Anti-Vax people he told them, “it’s a free country.”

There is so much I want to say and I’ve been struggling to find the words to post my story anywhere. I am simply hoping I have found the right words.

This video is dedicated to George Floyd but it is also to all the other people out there fighting against this Injustice. You matter. We cannot give up and become complacent. We cannot settle for this treatment. We deserve better and people in power need to do better.

There is no peace without justice.
