Most people visiting Tokyo have never heard of this place. Shibamata is a neighborhood where the Showa era never really left. From retro cafes filled with vintage toys, to nostalgic candy shops and old-school arcades, this hidden side of Tokyo feels like stepping into a time capsule.
In this vlog, we explore Shibamata’s iconic streets, starting with a Showa-era retro cafe where colorful cream sodas and classic treats like pudding are unforgettable. We visit a vintage arcade shop where classic pinball machines and Super Mario games bring back the childhood joy of simpler days. Walking through Taishakuten Sando, the main shopping street, we try local delicacies from family-run stores that have been here for decades.
We also visit the historic Taishakuten Temple, a peaceful sanctuary known for its beautiful wooden carvings, and end the day at Yamamoto Tei—a merchant’s historic mansion where we enjoyed iced matcha and wagashi while sitting on tatami rooms, with a view of a stunning Japanese garden.
This is not the Tokyo you see in travel guides. This is Tokyo’s hidden retro town. A place where every corner feels like a scene from a classic film, and every small detail pulls you into the heart of old Tokyo.
If you're looking for unique Tokyo spots away from the usual tourist trails, Shibamata is a must-visit!
