From 17-19 November 2025, Te Pūnaha Matatini held a wānanga at Wairewa Marae on Te Pātaka o Rākaihautū (Banks Peninsula) to reflect on how we include te ao Māori in our work. Mana whenua grounded us with insights and lessons from the perspective of the hapū of Wairewa, Kāti Irakehu and Kāti Makō. We shared practices, learning from mana whenua, and engaging with the whenua, roto and moana. It was truly inspiring to see all the work that Wairewa Rūnanga has done and has planned for their takiwā.
From their innovative work supporting the tuna population in their roto, the archaeological work conducted at Te Kāio Bay, large scale tree planting, and pest control across such a large area, the kaitiakitanga demonstrated is a testament to hard work done by a large group of people over a long period of time. A huge thank you to Matiu Prebble for sharing his knowledge and wisdom about this mahi to us all!
We also spent time at Tāwhaki National Aerospace Centre on Kaitorete Spit. To see and hear about the wonderful work that is being conducted there firsthand was a pleasure. In particular, it was great to hear about the way in which Māori values are properly underpinning everything they do. A big thank you to Rulon Nutira and Julian Phillips for showing us the facilities.
