In the NICU, a premature baby often requires NG (nasogastric) feeding because they are too small or weak to feed by mouth. During NG feeding time, the nurse gently passes a soft feeding tube through the baby’s nose into the stomach. The process is done with great care to ensure the baby’s comfort and safety.
Once the tube is in place, warm expressed breast milk or formula is slowly given through the tube using a syringe or feeding pump.
