Indonesia - Arrests made at pro-democracy meeting

Nine people were arrested in Jakarta on Tuesday (10/3) following a raid on a pro-democracy meeting shortly after President Suharto was returned to a seventh term of office. The nine are being held at a police station in the north of the city. Indonesian security authorities have forbidden all mass gatherings and street rallies during the 11-day People's Consultative Assembly that will swear in Suharto for a seventh
five-year term on Wednesday.
The activists from the pro-democracy group Siaga had been supporting the candidacy of two opposition leaders who nominated themelves as alternatives to the sole candidacy of Suharto.
Meanwhile, thousands of students took to streets across the country to add their weight to the mood of opposition to President Suharto.
