Hey everyone! In today’s video, we’re going to show you how to quickly and easily check the customs duties when importing car parts from Germany to the United States. Whether you're a business owner or just curious, this step-by-step guide will help you navigate the process with confidence.
🛠️ Step 1: Choose the Country of Origin
Start by selecting Germany from the Country of Origin dropdown menu.
🔢 Step 2: Enter the HTS Code
Next, enter the HTS code for the item you're importing. Since we’re dealing with car parts, we’ll use 8302.10.30.00 as our example.
📊 Step 3: Show Duty Rates
Once you’ve entered the code, click the Show Duty Rates button. This will bring up a QUESTION screen.
❓ Understanding the QUESTION Screen
Sometimes, the FindHS.Codes system needs more details to calculate the correct duty. In this case, it asks whether the part is for a passenger car or light truck. Why? Because the U.S. applies special tariffs—called Section 232 Auto Tariffs—on these parts when they come from EU countries.
So, if your part is for a passenger car or light truck, choose Option 2. If it’s for other vehicles like tractors, buses, or ships, go with Option 1.
💰 Option 2: Passenger Car or Light Truck
Selecting Option 2 shows the applicable tariffs under Section 232. In our example, that’s a 15% customs duty. You can then enter your shipment value to see the total taxes and costs using the built-in calculator.
🔄 Option 1: Other Vehicles
Now let’s see what happens if we choose Option 1. Click the Question link at the top, then hit SELECT next to Option 1. The system recalculates and brings up another QUESTION screen—this time about aluminum content.
🧪 Aluminum Content Matters
Why does this matter? Because products under this HTS code may be subject to Section 232 aluminum tariffs. If your item contains aluminum, it could face extra duties based on the percentage of aluminum it includes.
By default, it assumes 100% aluminum—but you can adjust that. If there’s no aluminum, set it to 0%.
📈 Two Tax Lines Explained
When you enter a percentage other than 100%, you’ll see two tax lines:
• Line 1 shows duties under the IEEPA Reciprocal Tariffs (for non-aluminum content).
• Line 2 shows duties under the Section 232 aluminum tariffs.
Again, enter your shipment value to calculate the total cost.
Clicking on the link associated with a specific tax will take you to a page displaying detailed information for that tax. For instance, selecting the IEEPA Reciprocal Tariffs link will show you the relevant Reciprocal Tariff details. You can also access footnote explanations referenced in the HS Code descriptions below. To view all applicable taxes for your selected product, simply scroll to the top of the screen.
✅ Wrap-Up
And that’s it! With just a few clicks, you can find out exactly what customs duties apply to your imported car parts. If you found this video helpful, don’t forget to like, subscribe, and drop your questions in the comments below!
