Warfare is one of the most brutal, devastating, and well executed war films I’ve ever seen. In this video essay, I explore what makes it a “One Shot” — a masterpiece of trauma and futility that offers no redemption, no resolution, and no reason to return for a second viewing.

Along the way, I reflect on other films like Requiem for a Dream, Irreversible, Saving Private Ryan, and Hereditary (spoiling warning included) and the difference between meaningful and meaningless suffering in the stories we tell ourselves.
