Usually called “ECMO,” extracorporeal membrane oxygenation has long been a staple of critical care for its ability to bypass the lungs or both the lungs and the heart, adding oxygen and stripping out carbon dioxide to sustain tissue, no lungs required. Frequently used during transplant surgeries, critical care teams are increasingly employing the technology with the sickest of COVID-19 patients.
