‘It’s a trip of about six kilometres to my yard when you make your way across the river,’ journalist Pekka Juntti ponders, as he grabs his skis and swings himself across the national border from Sweden to Finland. Pekka hasn’t ventured far from his childhood home – but has definitely travelled abroad.
The life of this journalist from Tornio, now living in Haparanda, spreads across both sides of this boundless border, only made sorely visible by the coronavirus in the spring of 2020. The related pandemic halted everyday cross-border life, cutting a deep wedge in the normal routine. Now, however, the double city has again fixed its sights on a mutual, borderless future.
Pekka Juntti’s story is the first part of a series about Tornio and its unique inhabitants, a eulogy to all visitors to this fantastic borderless border – something that is possible only here!
