In today’s lesson, we’re going to talk about Deep Vein Thrombosis, or DVT. This is a serious condition where a blood clot forms in a deep vein, usually in the leg. For massage therapists, it’s absolutely critical to recognize the signs—things like swelling, redness, warmth, pain, or tenderness in the calf. Why? Because massaging over a clot could dislodge it and cause a life-threatening emergency, like a pulmonary embolism.
We’ll cover what DVT is, how to spot the red flags, why it’s a general contraindication for massage, and what to do if a client mentions symptoms. We’ll also review how to adapt safely if someone has a history of DVT but is medically cleared. The key takeaway? Always prioritize client safety—when in doubt, refer out.
