• Subject: The song is about a fictional, heroin-addicted couple in West
Berlin who dream of a different life, but they are unable to
escape their addiction.
• Inspiration: It was inspired by the drug scene around Bahnhof Zoo
(Zoological Garden train station) in West Berlin during the
late 1970s, which Alphaville's singer Marian Gold witnessed
firsthand.
• Title: The title was chosen to fit the tragic irony of the song's narrative.
It reflects the "lie of the loser" who finds self-worth in a false sense
of accomplishment.
The idea is that if you are a failure at home, you can at least tell
yourself you are "Big in Japan".
