Can I finally crack the code of aluminium casting for my rotating mast bearings? 🔥
In this video, I take on my second and third attempts at casting the top and bottom bearings for the Ljungström rig — a key feature of my yacht design.
Each pour is around 4kg (10lbs) of molten aluminium, and I’m learning just how much skill it takes to get consistent results. So far I’ve experimented with loose coarse and fine sand, tamped and untamped molds, and tried using slurry coatings to separate the aluminium from the sand.
The results? Mixed — with both highs and lows — but exactly the kind of learning curve I expected. If I can get this right, it will bring together many aspects of the rig’s design and make the system work beautifully on my 23ft (7m) Sharpie trailer yacht.
