20260111 Repaired Mikado Running Well

I assembled this engine from a kit in the fall of 2022. I was quite surprised when it ran beautifully, as I had no idea what I was doing. In August of 2025 there was a sudden onset of a major problem. The wheels didn't move when I opened the throttle. Steam was blowing through the system without doing any work. Ryan Bednarik, from Triple R Services, informed me I needed to re-lapp the surfaces where the valves slide along the tops of the cylinder blocks. This is an Accucraft/Aster 1:32 scale model of Union Pacific Mikado 2-8-2 No. 2480. It is fueled by alcohol and runs on 45mm gauge track. The prototype was constructed in Schenectady, NY, around 1918 and was in service until about 1958. Do a search for "gauge one live steam" to learn more about this hobby. It is a lot of fun.
