History of This Proof
Ancient Chinese Origin (Zhou Bi Suan Jing, c. 1000–500 BCE)
• One of the earliest recorded proofs of the Pythagorean theorem appears in the Chinese mathematical classic Zhou Bi Suan Jing (周髀算经, “The Arithmetical Classic of the Gnomon and the Circular Paths of Heaven”).
• The proof is purely geometric, showing a square built on the hypotenuse that equals the sum of squares on the other two sides.
• The method uses a dissection and rearrangement — identical to the “triangles inside a square” proof: a large square containing four right triangles arranged around a central square.
• This makes it arguably the oldest visual proof of the Pythagorean theorem known in history.
