Have you ever wondered about the yellow building that sits at the corner of Nelson Road and 39th Street? It’s the Altona Grange, a Boulder County Landmark. Built in 1896, the grange served as a center for community for the town of Altona, once located at the mouth of Lefthand Canyon. The grange, which promoted agriculture and family, thrived until WWII. The grange hall went through a series of modifications to meet the needs of its growing membership. In the post-war era, however, the membership declined and the building fell into disrepair. In 2006, the remaining grange members decided to restore the building. Today, the restored Altona Grange is a proud reminder of Boulder County’s agricultural past. This video traces the history of the Altona Grange from its beginnings to the present day.
