As you likely heard, one of our beloved coworkers, Travis Dunn, was violently attacked in our emergency room this month and suffered a fractured skull. This horrific assault is a symptom of a larger staffing crisis:
UPMC executives have broken their promises to invest in our community and we are struggling with severe understaffing.
For many years, we have been urgently calling for appropriate staffing levels and security measures to keep Altoona workers, patients and families safe. Instead, the number of nurses at Altoona has fallen by 300 since UPMC took over, and they have resisted most of our safety proposals.
As the largest health system and private employer in our commonwealth – with hundreds of millions in profit – it’s time for UPMC to finally invest in our community and be a leader in safety. And it’s time we ALL make our voices heard, together.
