The session, facilitated by Lucy Burgmann, centred on authentic, reflective leadership and lessons from large-scale change at Homes New South Wales. Participants explored how self-awareness and understanding diverse thinking styles strengthen collaboration and decision-making. Lucy stressed that effective leaders build partnerships around complementary strengths, balance transparency with boundaries, and sustain themselves through reflection and self-care.
The case study of Homes NSW illustrated how deliberate, people-centred leadership underpins successful reform. Formed in 2024 through the merger of multiple agencies, the organisation’s change process has been guided by the “three Cs” – Communicate, Collaborate and Commit – anchored in extensive listening to staff, tenants, and partners. CEO Bec Pinkstone and Minister Rose Jackson were cited as modelling this approach, balancing pace with patience and clarity with humility. Lucy likened change to “a marathon of marathons,” requiring stamina, realistic timeframes, and honest conversations about challenges. Participants were encouraged to “think forward, not think back,” focusing on continuous learning, visible progress, and inclusive coalitions that ensure no one is left behind.
