2023.11.2 InNoVAtion Lunch and Learn-Best Practice(s) for Artificial Intelligence in Transportation

The Northern Virginia Transportation Authority’s (NVTA) Transportation Technology Strategic Plan (TTSP) includes nine roles that NVTA can undertake in proactively preparing for innovation. One of these is a role for staff to conduct outreach and education. With this in mind, NVTA staff are conducting a series of virtual InNoVAtion Lunch and Learns, designed to provide opportunities for pragmatic information exchange about technologies or innovations that are feasible immediately or in the near future (1-5 years.) In this session Dr. Tom Sanchez, Professor of Urban Affairs and Planning (UAP) at Virginia Tech shared Best Practices for Artificial Intelligence in Transportation. This is relevant to several of these nine strategies, most notably:
• Strategy #4 - Enhance operations of the multimodal transportation system through connectivity and automation.
• Strategy #6 - Maximize the potential of physical and communication infrastructure to serve existing and emerging modes.
