This fancy-looking three-row car is full of smart features and evokes the delight of an electric car.
Rivian is a relatively new automaker from Irvine, California, that claims to produce "electric adventure vehicles."
Its first products are the R1T all-electric pickup truck and the R1S SUV, and while the hype around electric vehicle (EV) start-ups tends to fade, Rivian maintains the hype. A short ride on the 2022 Rivian R1S proved why it is worthy of such hype.

Style for a few days
Rivian cars are now some of the coolest looking. The company managed to rely on the aesthetics of retro design, but at the same time create a completely modern, but at the same time durable image. Square and straight, I like the cartoon face of the R1S, its unique oval headlights, futuristic light strips at the front and rear that span the entire width of the SUV, and the fact that it doesn't look gloomy. SUVs may look overly aggressive with huge gaping grilles and angular vents, but the R1S looks fun and friendly, like a friendly robot assistant from a Disney movie.
The brand uses environmentally friendly and recycled materials to create a high-end, but durable interior. I like the accents of wood with open pores, the laconic look of the dashboard and the spacious interior. The vegan leather seat upholstery also seems to be of high quality, and the fit and finish are good, except that a few panels will move a little if you press them. For comparison, the interior seems to be of much higher quality than that of Tesla. It's not a solid Audi or Porsche, but it's still impressive.

Excellent transmission and chassis
The Rivian R1S battery pack is built into its frame, and the company claims that it is capable of fast charging with 200 kW direct current for long periods of time. During this short trip, there was no charging, no off-road driving, and there was not enough time for a proper range test, but, nevertheless, the transmission turned out to be impressive.

When using a standard battery pack, the range is estimated at 415 km, and with a larger capacity battery, this figure increases to 515 km. All Rivian models currently have a four-engine all-wheel drive system that allows you to distribute torque to four wheels. The automaker says this setup is good for a combined 835 hp and 908 lb-ft of torque, allowing the SUV to accelerate to speed from a standstill in just over three seconds. Later, a more affordable installation with two engines of about 600 hp and 600 lb-ft of torque will be available.
Acceleration on the road is strong, which is not surprising, because most electric cars are fast. But considering how big and heavy the Rivian is, it seems even more impressive. The R1S doesn't seem like a big or heavy vehicle to pilot; it's easy to maneuver and park, and visibility is great thanks to the large square windows and high landing.
The SUV is very tough on broken roads, even in the mildest conditions, but it is also not uncommon for electric vehicles. Rivian offers a sufficient number of settings for how the R1S feels and behaves depending on the ground clearance (everything comes with an adjustable air suspension as standard), regenerative braking, steering and much more. The steering was a highlight, and the regenerative braking was strong, but not too nervous. The wind noise on the highway was quite loud, perhaps the only minor malfunction that made itself felt during this short trip.

Endless practicality

The R1S impresses with its practicality. With three rows of seats and a variety of thoughtful storage solutions, families traveling outdoors are sure to find this SUV very comfortable. Under the cargo divider there is a large trunk with hidden storage, accommodating 313 liters of cargo. This divider is designed to reduce the lifting height, but it can be folded vertically with a magnet to make room for taller items.

With the rear seats folded, it turns out 2966 liters of cargo space and another compartment for storing things under the floor. This partition can be used as a shelf to create a flat luggage compartment floor so that you can easily insert longer items.
