According to The Hymnal 1940 Companion, this hymn by Mr. John Brownlie first appeared in his Hymns from the East, being Centos and Suggestions from the Service Book of the Holy Eastern Church. In the Companion it is noted that there is no indication of the source on which his rendering is based. It also prints two stanzas that were omitted by the Hymnal from which I was introduced to this hymn. Those two stanzas read as follows:
O Brighter than the rising morn,
When he victorious rose,
And left the lonesome place of death,
Despite the rage of foes;—
O Brighter than that glorious morn,
Shall this fair morning be,
When Christ, our King, in beauty comes,
And we his face shall see.
These omitted stanzas followed the second stanza and are included in the Liber Cantici.
I wrote the tune following some details I had planned for Advent of 2025: to write all of the hymns in the key of Bb, symbolizing the Second Person of the Most Holy Trinity, our Lord Jesus Christ. It also follows a very chorale-like structure, even resembling J. S. Bach’s own harmonizations of certain chorales, and is characterized by a very simple melody, though I must admit that it may go rather high for male voices in the congregation.
