Welcome back to Lonesome Fridays, where I share a song each week for the last 10 weeks of the year. They'll all go on a playlist where you can string them together to form a more-or-less coherent solo set.
I'm kicking things off with The Prisoner's Song, first recorded and released in 1924 (100 years ago!) by Vernon Dalhart. It had the distinction of being the first million-selling country song. Vernon was from Texas but lived in Brooklyn like I do (part-time). So we can deduce that commercial country music originates in NYC! Currently I'm in Australia though, and shot this video on my cell phone back stage at the lovely Dorrigo Bluegrass & Roots festival where I'm performing with Jacob Jolliff.
In other news, I'm getting ready to offer a five week Zoom class on the guitar style of Clarence White (who played an awesome version of Prisoner's Song, I might add!), focusing on his playing in 1973 with the bluegrass super group Muleskinner. It meets on Sundays from Nov. 3 to Dec. 1. The noon and 5pm sections are full but I just added a 3pm Eastern section. The details are in this Facebook event description, and you can DM me there if you'd like to sign up or have any questions:
