The Vermont Long Trail - Nothing Goes As Planned

In September Lotus and I set out to hike the 272 mile Long Trail across the Green Mountains of Vermont, from Canada to Massachusetts. Things did not go as planned. From hiking injuries, a lot of bad weather deep in the mountains, and much harder terrain than expected we knew we were off to a rough start.

The long trail is the oldest recreational hiking trail in the united states, and personally it has been a bucket list hike on my list for a very long time. It definitely didn't disappoint! I was loving it, and I did love my time out there.

We had originally planned to hike the colorado trail, but when those plans didn't work out we set sights on the slightly shorter LT. We both had been missing the east coast, and east coast hiking a lot and it seemed like the perfect idea. Unfortunately we were on a bit of a time crunch! Given the flight we were able to get we would have to do the trail very fast. Not FKT fast, but certainly a lot more miles per day than is maybe comfortable for most.

We both have hiked the Appalachian Trail in the past, and we knew what we were in for, but the sentiment rings true. Long distance hiking is more difficult than simply walking, even for very experienced thru hikers.
