Team China claims gold at the Mixed Relay of the ISMF Youth World Cup in Forni di Sopra.
In a thrilling conclusion to the second day of competition at the ISMF Youth World Cup Forni di Sopra, Team China claimed victory in the Mixed Relay race, featuring Ani Pumu, who had secured second place in yesterday's sprint relay, and Langjia Gonsong, who also won the U18 sprint race the day before. The race culminated in an intense battle, with the Chinese team crossing the finish line only three seconds ahead of the home team, Italy, represented by Giorgia Pollini and Luca Curioni, who sealed the silver medal with a remarkable push in the final uphill and downhill segments.
France secured the bronze medal with a strong performance from Camille Maupoix and Edgar Cognaud, finishing closely behind the leading teams. Team Austria, featuring Emma Albrecht and Elias Peer, finished fourth, while Switzerland's Robine Deseyn and Malik Uldry took fifth place. German team Helena Euringer and Moritz Bauregger followed in sixth, with Spain's Nuria Balaguer Molina and Marti Costa Ylla in seventh, and Poland's Pauline Gomola and Wojciech Kloda rounding out the top eight.
How the race unfolded
The race began with Camille Maupoix from France establishing a significant lead, tagging her teammate with an impressive 18 seconds ahead of a close-knit pack of seven countries. However, on the second lap, 17-year-old Langjia Gonsong from China made remarkable strides, rapidly closing the gap on Team France. What followed was an exhilarating back-and-forth battle that extended into the final climb.
As the teams reached the ascent of the sprint course from the previous day, the Chinese male athlete found an extra gear, surging into the lead. Edgar Cognaud from France faced challenges in the final meters but managed to fend off the competition to maintain third place for his team.
This victory marks the second win for a Chinese team in the mixed relay at the Youth World Cup circuit, following their triumph last year in Molde, Norway. The event showcased the talent and competitive spirit of the youth athletes, setting the stage for an exciting remainder of the season: the third sstage of the ISMF Youth World Cup in Malino Brdo (SVK) in February and the Youth Finals in Puy Saint Vicent Pelvoux in France in March.
