Sussex Series Part 5
I visited St Mary's Church in Rye and battled my fear of heights to bring you a look at the stunning view from the top. I also included photos of the inside of the church.
St Mary's is best known for its unique clock featuring the 'Quarter Boys' - two angelic figures who strike the bells of the clock on the quarter hours. The church bells were stolen by French invaders in 1377 and the building badly damaged by fire. They were recovered the following year when local men sailed to Normandy and got them back.
There is also a beautiful stained glass window designed by Victorian artist Edward Burne Jones of the Pre Raphaelite group of painters.
