Fishing the mangroves on Tampa Bay’s south shore in the dead heat of July isn’t easy — but my son and I made the most of it right before my birthday. With a huge thunderstorm hovering nearby, we got some much-needed shade and just enough of a break from the heat to put the fish on!
Using live shrimp, cut cigar minnows, and cut ladyfish on the bottom, we managed a great bite in just a couple of late afternoon hours. We landed multiple redfish, including two solid slot-sized fish, and my son caught his personal best snook at 30 inches long! On top of that, I hooked into a surprise tarpon that towed our little boat around before breaking free.
Summertime fishing on Tampa Bay can be brutal, but with the right techniques, it can also be incredibly rewarding. This trip had it all: heat, storms, and some of the best inshore action Tampa Bay has to offer.
